The Hiring Surge of December 2018

Hiring surged in December with employers adding 312,000 jobs. This figure was well above the expectation of economists and only confirms that the U.S. economy continues to go from strength to strength.

A total of 2.6 million new jobs were created in the year 2018. This was up from the 2.2 million jobs created in 2017.

The following sectors saw the most amount of jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • Education and health services with 82,000 jobs added
  • Leisure and hospitality with 55,000 jobs added
  • Professional and business services with 43,000 jobs added
  • Construction with 38,000 jobs added
  • Manufacturing with 32,000 jobs added

Unemployment ended the year at 3.9 percent, up from 3.7 percent in November 2018.

With the employment rate still record-breakingly low, hiring the best talent in such a competitive market has become increasingly difficult. It certainly is a job seeker’s market.

It is as good a time as any to seek the guidance of a recruiter to fulfill your hiring needs or to ensure you are placed in the right job and make the best decision for yourself given the job-filled market.
