Latest Jobs Report Creates Optimism for Employers and Job Seekers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) jobs report, released Friday, March 10, shows strong U.S. employment growth. 235,000 jobs were created during the month of February, greatly exceeding economists’ expectations of a mere 190,000. Additionally, the total number of employed Americans reached its all-time high at 152.5 million working people.

Construction was the segment with the most job gains, but employment in Professional and Business Services added 37,000 jobs in February and 597,000 over the year, the BLS reported. Within this area of progress includes jobs in Accounting, Finance, and Office Support. The Manufacturing and Healthcare industries also experienced an uptick of jobs in February.

The Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) evaluated the jobs data from a recruiting perspective; the organization found that recruiting was less difficult. “Compared with February of last year, in February 2017 the recruiting difficulty index declined by 8.9 points in the manufacturing sector and 8.8 points in the service sector.” This information is promising for both employers seeking qualified candidates and professionals seeking new employment.
